19. Jimmy Kimmel

Jimmy Kimmel isn’t afraid to push buttons, and that’s what makes him one of the most entertaining late-night hosts. On Jimmy Kimmel Live, he has managed to make a television show that is relevant in the internet age, premiering pranks that are designed to go viral, like the “Worst Twerk Ever” YouTube video and his numerous streeter stunts in which he lures passersby into making fools of themselves. A recent dispute -- and reconciliation -- with Kanye West powered his ratings through the roof, proving that no matter how much controversy he causes, Kimmel is having the last laugh. More on Jimmy Kimmel >

18. Sergey Brin

The 40-year-old Google cofounder is one of the most prominent Silicon Valley tycoons. His creation has changed the world in a greater way than perhaps any other product and shows no sign of diminishing in importance. This year, the very private Brin garnered attention for mixing the personal with business, as rumors spread that he and his wife were living separately after his affair with a Google employee. Still, no personal scandal can diminish his accomplishments. Google has made Brin filthy rich -- his net worth is estimated to be more than $24.4 billion -- and continues its reign as one of the most profitable internet companies. More on Sergey Brin >

17. Barack Obama

Barack Obama may be the most powerful man in the world, but he hasn’t had it easy. In the first year of his second term, his administration has been hit with the Edward Snowden leak, the Syria crisis, the Obamacare rollout, the government shutdown and debt-ceiling deadline, to name only a few storms he's had to weather.

With an acrimonious Congress deeply mired in partisan battles, there are no easy answers to the issues facing America, and it remains to be seen how President Obama will fare in a time of low trust in government. Still, his steady hand in the face of GOP adversity makes it seem like the commander-in-chief was the real winner of the shutdown. More On Barack Obama >

Hell hath no fury like a woman with a vicious divorce lawyer.

Just ask some of the most powerful men in the world who have ended up on the wrong end of a settlement.

From professional athletes to media tycoons, all it takes is one marital misstep for your bank account to resemble the gas gauge of a Hummer.

But who, exactly, are the legal hawks behind these high-profile cases?

This list explores the judicial juggernauts who have reputations for being ruthless when it comes to the financial side of messy breakups.

Here are our picks for the top 10 divorce lawyers you would not want to face off with in a court of law.

10. Robert Stephan Cohen

attached imageClient: Christie Brinkley
Trial: Peter Cook (2008)
Damage: Sole custody of children and ownership of 18 Hampton homes

When supermodel Christie Brinkley filed for divorce from music legend Billy Joel in 1994, she enlisted the aid of attorney Robert Stephan Cohen. So, naturally, she hired Cohen again when it came time to divorce her fourth husband, Peter Cook, during their 2008 circus-like divorce trial. Cohen was able to paint a nasty picture of Cook as a porn-addicted adulterer, which paved the way for Brinkley to retain her fortune, as well as her massive property holdings in the Hamptons.

9. William S. Beslow

Client: Patricia Duff
Trial: Ronald Perelman (1999)
Damage$30 million

New York attorney William S. Beslow represented political activist Patricia Duff during her highly publicized divorce from billionaire Ronald Perelman during the late 1990s. The trial gained much attention as both Perelman and Duff threw volley after volley of insults and allegations at one another. Each side painted the other as being greedy and vain, with no regard for anyone but themselves. In the end, even though their miserable marriage lasted only 20 months, Beslow was able to negotiate a $30 million settlement for Duff.

8. Earle Lilly

Cynthia Rodriguez Alex Rodriguez a-rodClient: Cynthia Scurtis
Trial:
A-Rod (2008)
Damage: Undisclosed

When headlines broke that Yankee star Alex Rodriguez and his wife, Cynthia, were heading for splitsville, the media went wild. After all, the slugger had been linked to an array of beautiful women, including Madonna. Even though a carefully crafted prenup prevented Cynthia from completely cashing in on A-Rod’s fortune, Earle Lilly was still able to secure an attractive settlement for the scorned wife including a multimillion-dollar home, a lump sum and a hefty child support check each month.

7. Gloria Allred

Gloria AllredClient: Mel Brown ("Scary Spice")
Trial:
Eddie Murphy (2007)
Damage: $7 million

A former high school teacher from Philadelphia, Gloria Allred, went on to make a name for herself as one of the toughest female attorneys in the business. She‘s been involved in some of the most high-profile cases of the past 20 years, including representing Amber Frey in the Scott Peterson trial, actress Hunter Tylo and Shaquille O'Neal's mistress Vanessa Lopez. Expect Allred to be in the headlines yet again as she was recently hired by Tiger Woods’ mistress Rachel Uchitel.

6. Dennis Wasser

Client: Melissa Mathison
Trial: Harrison Ford (2004)
Damage: $118 million plus movie royalties

Hollywood superstar Harrison Ford has taken on everything from Nazis to intergalactic bad guys in Star Wars. But he never truly experienced the dark side until he faced off with his ex-wife’s lawyer, Dennis Wasser, in divorce court. With Wasser in her corner, Melissa Mathison was able to walk away from the marriage with $118 million and future royalties from the movies Ford made while the two were married, including The Fugitive, Air Force One, Indiana Jones and the Temple of DoomIndiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Witness, and Patriot Games.

5. Sandra Davis

Jerry Hall Mick JaggerClient: Jerry Hall
Trial
: Mick Jagger (1996)
Damage: $25 million

British lawyer Sandra Davis has represented some of the most high-profile divorces in the U.K., including negotiating a £17 million settlement for Princess Diana during her 1996 divorce from Prince Charles. The tough-as-nails Davis appeared in headlines yet again in 1999 when she represented Jerry Hall in her breakup from rock ‘n’ roll legend Mick Jagger. The hard-hitting lawyer was able to reach a settlement with Jagger’s camp, which allowed Hall to walk away with a cool $25 million in the bank.

4. Donald Schiller

michael jordan juanita jordan Client: Juanita Jordan
Trial: Michael Jordan (2006)
Damage: $168 million, the Chicago estate, and child custody

There wasn’t a court that the legendary Michael Jordan couldn’t rule — until he met superstar divorce lawyer Donald Schiller. When the NBA legend and his wife, Juanita, filed for divorce in 2006, Juanita immediately hired Schiller to hatch out details of an agreement that would satisfy the terms of their prenup. In the end, the legal eagle was able to secure $168 million, the Jordan’s seven-acre estate in Chicago, as well as custody of the couple’s three kids. It just goes to show that a prenup doesn’t necessarily mean you can get out of a marriage unscathed — even if you’re one of the most legendary athletes of all time.

3. Fiona Shackleton

Sir Paul Mccartney lawyer fiona shackleton

Client: Sir Paul McCartney
Trial: Heather Mills (2008)
Damage: $49 million

When your client list includes England’s royal family, chances are your reputation precedes you. Having been Prince Andrews’ divorce lawyer, as well as Princes Charles’ lawyer, it was only natural that she would represent the world’s most famous man, Sir Paul McCartney, during his breakup with Heather Mills. Even though Mills managed to get £24.3 million from the former Beatle, it was far less than the £100 million she was asking for. Fiona Shackleton was so aggressive during the proceedings that during the final settlement hearing, an angry Mills reportedly dumped water over the steely lawyer’s head.

2. Daniel Jaffe

Client: Anna Murdoch
Trial: Rupert Murdoch (1998)
Damage: $1.7 billion

How badass do you have to be to go up against one of the most powerful men in the world? Just ask Daniel Jaffe. The Beverly Hills lawyer represented Anna Murdoch during the breakup of her marriage with media mogul Rupert Murdoch back in 1998. Not to be intimidated by Rupert’s wealth and power, Jaffe put together an agreement that allowed his client to walk away with a mind-blowing $1.7 billion settlement. And Rupert? Well, he’s still one of the richest men in the world, and he went on to marry a former employee who’s almost half his age.

1. Sorrell Trope

Elin and Tiger Woods

Client: Elin Nordegren
Trial: Tiger Woods (2010)
Damage: $100 million plus $20,000/month hush fee

When you’ve been in the divorce business as long as Sorrell Trope has, you’re bound to know a thing or two. This legendary lawyer has represented Britney Spears, Nicole Kidman and will be in Elin Nordegren’s corner during her upcoming divorce trial with golf master Tiger Woods. Given what’s at stake, Nordegren will undoubtedly spare no expense when it comes to retaining this legal lion. But does Trope have the skills to take on a moneymaking machine like Woods? Given this senior lawyer’s background, Tiger will most likely be begging for a mulligan before all is said and done.

[Update: In 2010, Tiger Woods settled $100 million of his $600 million fortune on his ex-wife Elin and agreed to pay her a reported $20,000 a month in support, provided she refuses to talk about his private life.]

11 Terrible Casting Decisions That Nearly Ruined Movies

$
0
0

Sofia Coppola, The GodfatherEvery time you enter a movie theater you're asked to accept the unreal as real for the purpose of the story you're about to watch.

It's called suspension of disbelief, and for the most part this tacit agreement between you and the filmmaker works quite well.

However, there are some times when filmmakers make it impossible for you to lose yourself in the worlds they've created by casting the wrong actor in a principle role.

Think of John Wayne as Genghis Khan in The Conqueror or Sofia Coppola as Mary Corleone in The Godfather III.

The very presence of these actors is so jarring that it draws you out of the movie and reminds you that you're surrounded by strangers in a germ-filled room that may or may not be crawling with bedbugs.

It's an unsettling experience and it happens more often than you may think.

Here are 11 instances in which a horribly miscast actor nearly ruined the movie they appeared in.

See who was clearly miscast >

Topher Grace as Venom in "Spider-Man 3"

We have nothing against Topher Grace. We enjoyed him in That '70s Show and even found ourselves laughing out loud at his antics in Take Me Home Tonight.

However, just because he can pull off goofy good-guy roles doesn't mean he can convincingly play a supervillain.

That became abundantly clear in 2007 when this spindly smart aleck was cast as Eddie Brock and his deadly alter ego, Venom, in Spider-Man 3. Grace was convincing enough as the underhanded Brock, but his turn as Marvel's toothsome Symbiote was nothing short of a disaster.

The New York native lacked the imposing size and presence to play Venom, and his ridiculous snarls and facial contortions turned an otherwise menacing character into a walking punchline.

Colin Farrell as Alexander in "Alexander"

We don't remember much of what we learned in our high school history classes, but we're reasonably certain that Alexander the Great was Greek.

So, you can imagine our surprise when Oliver Stone cast Colin Farrell in the central role of his 2004 biopic.

The Dublin native did nothing to disguise his Irish brogue and played Alexander as if he were a lifelong Liffeysiders fan who feasted on shamrocks and gargled with Guinness.

To make matters worse, Farrell's refusal to dump his accent forced supporting actors Val Kilmer and Jared Leto to adopt Irish accents of their own to cover any anomaly.

The result was a sonic mess that made the film feel far more like fantasy than the glorious history it promised to convey.

Denise Richards as Dr. Christmas Jones in "The World Is Not Enough"

We're willing to believe Denise Richards could be a stripper with a heart of gold or a promiscuous high school student, but asking us to believe that anyone dumb enough to have children with Charlie Sheen could be a nuclear physicist is demanding too much.

That was just one of many issues we had with The World Is Not Enough, the nineteenth (and weakest) film in the James Bond series.

Much like Denise Richards herself, this big-budget movie looked amazing, but had absolutely no depth.

50 Foods You Should Be Eating

avocado

Think popping a multivitamin once per day is good enough to cover all of the bases your diet is missing? Think again. Your body doesn't absorb nearly as many minerals and vitamins from that pill as you might believe. Instead, give your body a powerful boost by adding some natural superfoods to your diet.

1. Kale
If Popeye knew about kale, he'd never have bothered with spinach. This robust, dark leafy green is chock-full of nutrients like iron, vitamins A, C and K, fiber, antioxidants and is a great detoxifier (particularly for your liver).

2. Chia Seeds
Prized by the Mayans and Aztecs, this superfood is once again becoming a star in the modern-day diet. Add these to your diet to get a boost of fiber, omega fatty acids, calcium — and it's also a complete protein that's easy to add to salads and smoothies.

3. Spinach
Your mother always told you to eat this vibrant, leafy green if you want to grow up big and strong. What she didn't mention is that it's also great for preventing prostate cancer, is an excellent source of vitamins A, C and K, is loaded with antioxidants and is a good source of protein.

4. Swiss Chard
Swiss chard grades highly among the ranks of nutrient-packed leafy greens, but the best part might be the taste. Kale can be tough, collards are heavy and some people hate spinach, Swiss chard tastes similar to the very neutral romaine lettuce. Best of all, it has all of the same nutrients as its brethren.

5. Collard Greens
Collard greens don't get the type of love that kale does, but they still bring the same nutrients to the table, like vitamins C and K. Collards also give you vitamin E, folate and manganese, and similarly, are known as a cancer-fighter.collard greens6. Bee Pollen
Bee pollen is an incredible superfood that is considered to be one of the most complete foods you can eat. It is a richer source of protein than any animal source (percentage-wise) and it contains all of the essential amino acids as well. Throw in massive amount of enzymes (over 5,000), phytonutrients, vitamins (A, B, C and E), and a ton of minerals, and you'll be giving your body a big boost. Some of those benefits include increased energy, muscle growth, a stronger immune system, and an enhanced sex drive.

7. Moringa Leaf
Moringa leaf is still a well-kept secret, but those who are up on it are aware that this is one of the most nutrient-packed plants ever found. You'll get a good dose of iron, calcium, fiber, magnesium, potassium, protein, and amino acids. And all of this from a leaf!

8. Cacao Beans
Chocolate lovers can indulge all they want in cacao beans without feeling guilty. Although the chocolate that is near and dear to us all is made from this wonderful ingredient, the truth is that after heating, processing, adding a ton of dairy and sugar, and putting it in candy-bar wrapping, this superfood turns super unhealthy. Stick with the beans — either as a snack or by adding them to smoothies, and you'll be giving your body one of the highest antioxidant-rich foods around.

9. Blueberries
Blueberries are great for the brain, as they help improve your memory, as well as prevent the onset of any cognitive problems that tend to come with age. The best part is that this popular fruit is commonly available in the frozen section, and most of its important antioxidants are preserved even through freezing.

10. Turmeric
Turmeric powder is a spice that's often found in curries that has plenty of health benefits. It's not only known for its yellow pigment; it also helps combat free radicals, is great for inflammation and protects against memory loss. Although it's better recognized in its powder form, nowadays, a number of markets will carry the turmeric root as well, which looks very similar to ginger root.curry11. Garlic
Sure, it'll make your breath stink, but otherwise, it's worth it. This age-old superfood is renowned for giving your immune system a boost and warding off many types of cancer.

12. Acai
This tiny purple berry is packed with antioxidants that'll help fend off cancer, heart disease and even aging. It's one of the rare fruits that contains oleic acid, which is the same healthy fat that's found in olive oil, and even has the ideal essential amino acid complex, which is integral to muscle regeneration.

13. Lingonberries
Meet one of the newest berry superfoods on the block: lingonberries. They're loaded with plant polyphenols, which means these tart little red berries contribute in a number of fashions. They can lower inflammation, fight staph infections, replace antioxidants, add red blood cells and increase liver enzymes.

14. Beets
Beets can be messy to work with, but those who go through pain get the gain at the end. Beets are a unique source of betalains, which is a phytonutrient that can combat tumors. Make sure you don't throw away the beet greens, as they are high in lutein, which is related to and has similar benefits as vitamin A.

15. Black Beans
Black beans make this list because they're a very underrated source of protein. One cup provides around 15 grams of protein, and the best part is that you don't have to deal with any of the saturated fats that you might get from animal protein sources, like red meat.Beans16. Oats
Oats might seem like a boring breakfast option, but they're a great choice for those who need to lower their cholesterol. Whole grain oats help do exactly that, and help with the maintenance of your blood-sugar levels. Just add some blueberries, cinnamon or honey to liven up the oats.

17. Avocado
Avocado is another one of those paradoxical high-fat foods that's still good for your body. That's because it contains good fats, as well as oleic acid, lutein, folate, vitamin E and glutathione. All of those assist in deflecting heart disease and cancer.

18. Cod Liver Oil
Cod liver oil may not be the most delicious of items you'll pull out of your fridge, but among health nuts, it's a delicacy. Taking daily doses of cod liver oil is known to prevent arthritis and reduce muscle and joint pain. It also has the healthy fats, which means it's good for lowering cholesterol, maintaining mental health and preventing heart disease.

19. Broccoli
Maybe mom wasn't completely accurate when she said broccoli makes you smart — but you'd be smart to eat it. The superfood we've loved to hate as a kid helps detoxify the body and is a vegetable with one of the highest vitamin C concentrations. It's also developing into a game-changer in the role of cancer prevention.

20. Green Tea
Green tea gives your metabolism a kick in the butt by speeding it up. People who drink it burn more calories throughout the day (roughly 50 to 100 more). It also helps regulate glucose levels in the body (good for those battling diabetes), helps reduce bad cholesterol and slows the brain's aging process.greentea21. Walnuts
Boost your mood by adding more walnuts to your diet. Not only do these guys have a healthy amount of zinc, manganese and copper, they're also loaded with serotonin, which is a chemical in our brain directly tied to happiness and feeling good. As a matter of fact, walnuts have among the highest values of serotonin you can find.

22. Almonds
Almonds are one of the most popular superfoods on this list that most people already consume. What could possibly be bad about a high-fat food that's good for your heart? These guys are loaded with good fats which promote heart health and lower bad cholesterol. Almonds are also a quality source of manganese, vitamin E, magnesium and tryptophan.

23. Pine Nuts
This tiny-but-tasty nut sometimes gets lots in the shuffle, but it's a super contributor all across the board. From vitamin A and lutein, which help improve eyesight, to vitamin D (stronger bones), to vitamin C (robust immune system) to iron, protein and magnesium, make sure you take your dose.24. Quinoa
Vegetarians and vegans have been up on quinoa for years, but now everyone else is catching up. It offers a great source of non-animal protein with about eight grams in one cup. It's also a good source of fiber and iron.25. Yogurt/Kefir
Not all bacteria is bad for you. Your body needs some of the good kind to help the digestive tract and yogurt has those. Your colon will be happy (and function better) if you add more of these intestine-friendly bacteria to your diet. yogurt26. Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is a hot commodity these days, as bakers and fryers have been reaching for this fat rather than butter, margarine or processed oils. It's lauded for its lauric acid, which helps prevent some heart problems like high cholesterol and high blood pressure. In short, the saturated fats in coconut oil are not as harmful to you as the ones in commercially processed oils.

27. Coconut Water
Coconut water is an excellent alternative to a sports drink. Many people champion its hydrating powers, as it does a good job replacing lost fluids. It's also a great source of potassium (more than four bananas).

28. Ginger Root
Ginger root is a staple in Indian and Chinese cuisine. It's been known to do wonders for the stomach, namely easing stomach aches, eliminating gas and soothing the intestinal tract. Don't just use it in stir fries, though; throw a little knob into your morning smoothie to give it some kick.

29. Cayenne
Cayenne does more than just spice things up. It adds vitamins A, C and K, and is best known for its high amounts of capsaicin, which is good for fighting inflammation. Those trying to trim down a bit might want to add some more cayenne to their diet, as it can curb appetite and raises your body temperature, which will help you burn some extra calories.

30. Apple Cider Vinegar
Some people swear by the detoxifying effects of apple cider vinegar. It helps balance your body's alkaline pH levels and can stimulate cardiovascular circulation.apple cider31. Bulgur
Eating whole-grain foods is believed to reduce a number of cardiovascular risks. That's why this 100% whole-wheat grain is a good addition to your diet. It's a sound source of fiber, protein, iron, and vitamin B-6.

32. Pistachios
Looking to lower your cholesterol? Here's one option that's not in pill form: pistachios. They're stocked with phytosterols and soluble fiber, both of which have been shown to lower LDL (bad cholesterol).

33. Red Peppers
Red bell peppers often get overlooked as a superfood, but they're loaded in their own right. There's more than three times the daily recommended vitamin C intake per pepper, plus vitamin A, antioxidants and lycopene, which reduces the risk of prostate cancer.

34. Papaya
If you're feeling the onset of a cold, reach for this tropical fruit instead of an orange next time. One papaya has more than three times the daily recommended intake of vitamin C and is also stocked with flavonoids, vitamin B, potassium, magnesium and fiber. All in all, it's good for the cardiovascular system and reduces the risk of colon cancer.

35. Black Garlic
Black garlic is made by treating regular garlic with heat and humidity for about a month. Because of the gentle aging process, its health benefits are maintained, but its flavor is much more palatable than regular garlic. This version is sweet with hints of balsamic, tamarind and molasses.black garlic36. Cinnamon
Seeing this one on the list isn't an excuse to go scarf down multiple cinnamon buns. However, this age-old spice has been known to reduce the risk of cancer, cholesterol and also helps regulate blood-sugar levels.

37. Flax Seeds
Small in size but large in returns, flax seeds are easy to add to salads, cereals and soups. They are best known for being a good source of fiber, which helps keep your exits smooth. But they're also a good source for omega-3 fatty acid and lignans, which reduce breast cancer in women and prostate cancer in men.

38. Goji Berries
Typically, we associate oranges with vitamin C, but Goji have nearly 500 times more (per ounce) than those round orange guys. They also pack a vitamin B-complex punch, as well as vitamin E and a slew of antioxidants.

39. Spirulina
Spirulina is an algae that's loaded with all sorts of super benefits. It's a high-quality source of protein, gives you the Omegas (3, 6 and 9), a slew of vitamins (A, B-2, B-3, B-6, B-9, C, D, E) and has 26 times the calcium of milk. It has a rank taste, though, so it's best to try to hide it in smoothies.

40. Maca Root/Powder
No, it's not just a running gag from the fourth season of Arrested Development. Maca is typically found in powder form these days, as juice bars use it to give their smoothies a boost. This nutrient-rich root has been used by Native Americans for thousands of years, and it helps out your endocrine system, which should — among many other things — increase your energy, boost your sex drive and balance your hormones.

41. Pumpkin Seeds
Don't throw these guys out when you're scooping them out of squashes or pumpkins; they're a gold mine when it comes to nutritional value. These edible seeds are rich in magnesium, zinc, and even tryptophan, which helps you sleep.pumpkin seeds42. Wheatgrass
While the taste is sometimes hard to swallow, the juice extracted from wheatgrass has wonderful effects on the body. It does everything — stimulating the thyroid, boosting the red blood cell count, detoxifying the blood and gastrointestinal tract, fending off cancer and providing beneficial enzymes to the body.

43. Camu Camu
Camu Camu is a trendy superfood that's making the rounds in North America. That's because we love our vitamin C — the most used supplement in North America — and camu camu is loaded with it. One teaspoon is 1,180 times your recommended daily intake.

44. Chlorella
Those looking to detoxify/remove some of those heavy metals in the body might want to try chlorella. This single-cell algae is one of the best detoxifiers you'll find. Inside your body, it binds to metals, chemicals and pesticides in your digestive tract and pulls them out.

45. Lucuma
This tropical South American fruit is packed with antioxidants and B vitamins. It's been known to boost your immune system and prevent a number of ailments — including cancer. It's a sweet fruit, so it's an easy add to smoothies if you're using the powder form.

46. Maqui Berry
Most berries are high in antioxidants, but this Chilean berry is one of the richest sources you'll find. It also offers a healthy dose of vitamin C, calcium, iron, potassium and anti-inflammatory properties.

47. Hemp
We're not talking about the kind you smoke; that's hemp's seedier cousin, marijuana. Hemp seeds are great for your body, as they help with digestion. With its protein and fiber contents, hemp is more filling than you'd think. It also contains Omega-3 and 6 fatty acids, as well as essential amino acids.hemp48. Sacha Inchi
We're a little slow on the Inca peanut: Amazon rainforest inhabitants have been using this superfood to boost their bodies for centuries. It's one of the richest sources of Omega fatty acids you can find, and it's also filled with fiber, antioxidants and protein — plus it contains every amino acid.

49. Makuna Honey
Manuka honey is prized for its antibacterial properties. As odd as that sounds, this rare form of honey — produced from the Manuka trees in Australia and New Zealand — is known for its healing powers. The best part is that, unlike Buckley's Mixture, this stuff tastes pretty good.

50. Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Extra virgin olive oil has long been considered a healthy oil because it helps decrease the risk of heart disease. Studies have shown that people who regularly consume olive oil have lower levels of cancer than those who instead opt for butter or other high-saturated fats. Just make sure that you don't use olive oil on high heats, as it breaks down and then flips into a very unhealthy choice for your body.

The 10 Best Movie Scenes That Were Never In The Script

$
0
0

Most of the time, a film's script is a story plan. It'll get passed through a whole line of professionals from screenwriters and producers to directors and studio executives to make sure that everyone's on the same page. But some of the most memorable moments in cinematic history were actually created off the page and on-the-spot. That's the magic of improvisation.

It could be a basic line, a simple gesture or even an entire monologue. Hell, we constantly quote and re-enact the moments ourselves like obsessed cult followers. And knowing that our favorite moment was actually off-script leaves us with a greater admiration for the actors.

To pull off such spontaneity, it takes a deep understanding of the synergy of the environment and ins-and-outs of the portrayed character. Sometimes the small addition produces something scary, sometimes funny and occasionally even pretty iconic. But no matter what, improvising shows an impressive initiative as a performer. Let's take a look at our top 10 greatest movie scenes where an actor decided to just go with the flow.

10. The Shining (1980)

the shiningScene: Wendy Torrance (Shelley Duval) and her son Danny (Danny Lloyd) are hiding from their deranged husband and father Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) in a hotel bathroom. A window stuck half-open allows the son to escape outside, but still traps the mother in the room.

Jack slowly makes his way up the staircase with an axe and begins chopping through the door, complemented by wailing screams from Wendy. Jack then places his head to the jagged wooden opening and says, "Here's Johnny!"

Did you know: Nicholson actually decided to use that line because it was Ed McMahon's popular catchphrase introducing the highly non-threatening Johnny Carson on The Johnny Carson Show.

9. The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

hannibalScene: Psychopathic Dr. Hannibal Lecter is in the middle of telling a story to FBI agent Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster) about his cannibalistic ventures; eating the liver of a census-taker "with some fava beans and a nice Chianti." Lecter then finishes with a freakish hissing sound, bringing the frightening scene to a revolting level.

Did you know:That famous hissing sound was actually something that Hopkins tried as a joke during rehearsals to spook Foster. Director Jonathan Demme decided to keep it to maximize the impact on audiences. Ultimately, Hopkins got less than 25 minutes of screen time in the film, but that was enough for him to earn an Academy Award and also deliver this skin-crawling moment.

8. Taxi Driver (1976)

taxi driverScene: Cab driver Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro) has reached a neurotic and sociopathic moment, where he decides to talk to himself in the mirror; pretending that he's confronting a politician that he plans to kill.

As he looks at his reflection, he repeatedly says "You talkin' to me?" before whipping out his gun. It shows just how much his character is losing his rationality and beginning to spiral out of control.

Did you know: De Niro pretty much improvised everything. The original script by Paul Schrader only said, "Travis talks to himself in the mirror." So the 34-year-old actor decided to take advantage of the character's mental state and perform one of the most classic one liners used today when walking by a mirror.

7. Saving Private Ryan (1998)

matt damonScene: While waiting for an eventual German assault, Private Ryan (Matt Damon) and Captain Miller (Tom Hanks) sit down for a break on a destroyed French street. The characters swap stories about their lives back home and Ryan proceeds to talk about a funny story where his oldest brother gets caught making out with a girl in a barn. It's a moment of reflective happiness for the chuckling Ryan as he manages to vividly remember his family while in the middle of a hellish reality.

Did you know: That monologue from Damon wasn't in the script -- it was created completely off the cuff. While he wasn't really noticed for his overall performance as Ryan, Damon still managed to take control of the scene and deliver a spontaneous hit. And coming off of writing an Academy Award winning screenplay for Good Will Hunting, he was confident enough to use his storytelling abilities on the go.

6. Good Will Hunting (1997)

good will huntingScene: Whiz kid Will Hunting (Matt Damon) is at one of his many therapy sessions when therapist Sean Maguire (Robin Williams) decides to tell a personal story in order to get Hunter to better open up emotionally. He begins to recall a memory about his late wife and her flatulent habits. This causes Hunting to laugh hysterically.

Did you know: The entire story was made up by Williams mid-scene. Damon's laugh is actually genuine. And if you look closely, the camera shakes a tiny bit, most likely because the cameraman was laughing too. Williams earned his first and only Academy Award for his dramatic portrayal of the therapist, but still managed to plug in his well-known improvisational skills in a major moment.

5. Dumb And Dumber (1994)

dumb and dumberScene: Best buddies Lloyd Christmas (Jim Carrey) and Harry Dunne (Jeff Daniels) pick up a hitchhiker on a road trip. Little do they know that the hitchhiker is actually hitman Joe Mentalino (Mike Starr), hired to kill them. The joke's on him, though, because Mentalino doesn't know what he's in for.

Lloyd and Harry horse around endlessly, while the poor guy is stuck in the middle seat, trying to withstand the antics. He finally yells "Guys! Enough!" causing Lloyd and Harry to settle down for a moment. But just when the thug thinks that there's a calm ride ahead, Lloyd asks, "Hey, wanna hear the most annoying sound in the world?" and proceeds to yell in his ear.

Did you know: Yup, the entire scene evolved on the go. The original Farrelly Brothers script called for the two knuckleheads to test the hit man's nerves over an argument about jellybeans. But Carrey and Daniels ended up performing a whole bunch of craziness instead. Serious question: Did anyone really expect a duo like that to stick to an assigned dialogue?

4. Reservoir Dogs (1992)

reservoir dogsScene: Mr. Blonde, aka Vic Vega (Michael Madsen) is a thief who's torturing a police officer. The cop is tied up, has a duct-taped mouth and a couple of cuts on his face. But the whole scene is then pushed to a disturbing level.

After "Stuck in the Middle With You" begins to play on the radio, Vega breaks into a bit of a dance, before then approaching the tied up officer and cutting off his ear with a straight razor. Vega holds up the bloody organ in his hand and talks into the ear, saying, "Hey, what's going on? You hear that?"

Did you know: Director Quentin Tarantino never had anything scripted for Madsen to do after chopping off the prosthetic ear, so the actor just decided to improvise and add a quick -- and hilariously memorable -- comment.

3. Knocked Up (2007)

knockedupScene: While on a car ride, Ben Stone (Seth Rogen) and Pete (Paul Rudd) perform a hilarious banter trying to make fun of each other in a really juvenile manner. After Pete says,"Know how I know you're gay?" the two of them go back and forth, repeating the line and filling in the blank with a comedic response.

The characters go through a bunch of answers -- from "You wear v-neck sweaters with nothing underneath" to "You still make Brokeback Mountain jokes."

Did you know: The entire dialogue is improvised by the two actors. In the DVD extra, the ad-libbed exchange runs for over six minutes. Rogen and Rudd first came up with the mindless idea on the set of 2005's The 40 Year-Old Virgin in a 30-second scene and then decided to continue the joke in Knocked Up. Comedy maestro Judd Apatow, who was the director and screenwriter for both projects, was confident in letting both guys run with their own creativity.

2. Raiders Of The Lost Ark (1981)

sword gun fightScene: In the middle of a wild chase in the markets of Cairo, Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) runs into a crowd, which disperses to reveal a black-robed warrior handling a large sword.

After facing some intimidating sword spinning, Jones decides to conserve some energy -- he puts away his whip, busts out a revolver and shoots the villain down. It's 95% badass, and 5% amusing.

Did you know: The scene was originally set to be an elaborate whip vs. sword fight. The swordsman rehearsed the sequence for weeks, but Ford got food poisoning the night before and couldn't perform the full action scene. So after consulting with director Steven Spielberg, the scene was changed to the iconic one-hit-wonder that it is today.

1. The Godfather (1972)

cannoli godfatherScene: While Mafia caporegime Peter Clemenza (Richard Castellano) heads out to have Paulie Gatto (John Martino) killed, his wife also tells him to remember to pick up cannoli.

As a result, the murder takes place during the cannoli run. After Clemenza's henchman whacks Gatto in a parked car, the mafia man then instructs the lackey: "Leave the gun. Take the cannoli."

Did you know: The original crime script just asked for Castellano to say "Leave the gun." However, the actor decided to improvise some humor and play off the previous scene where his wife asks him to run the errand. With just one tiny tweak, Castellano created a boss of a line.

The 20 Most Desirable Women Of The Year

$
0
0

Every year, AskMen asks their readers to vote on the most desirable women in the world. The results are in, and here are the top 20.

20. Marissa Mayermarissa mayer

In 2012, Marissa Mayer took on what seemed to some an impossible task: Turning Yahoo! around. But if anyone has a shot at saving the tech behemoth, it’s the young Silicon Valley power broker. Mayer has made some bold choices -- buying Tumblr, for one -- and though numbers may not show a total 180, she has undeniably reinvigorated the brand.

19. Rihannarihanna barclays center may 5 2013

At the end of 2013, Rihanna broke the record for most No. 1 pop songs. That’s no surprise to fans of the Barbadian superstar, who has been named the sexiest woman alive by more than one men’s magazine. Also notable: she can twerk upside down (see the “Pour It Up” video for proof).

18. Rita Ora
rita ora

Rita Ora is a pop star for the modern age. The genre-blurring singer is 100% edge, with none of the faux-innocence of the Britney era. Born in Kosovo and raised in London, Ora released her first album in 2012 and has been riding a wave of popularity since. We dig her over-the-top look.

17. Zooey Deschanel
Zooey Deschanel

The Manic Pixie Dream Girl trope is played out, but that hasn't turned us off from the OG MPDG herself, Zooey Deschanel. The actress's blue eyes and hipster quirkiness have enchanted men everywhere, and factor heavily into us agreeing to watch New Girl with our girlfriends. Zooey, you give "adorkable" a good name.

16. Scarlett Johansson
Scarlett Johansson

We'll admit that we had started to take Scarlett Johansson for granted. We knew she was hot, but she was a bit overexposed. Then Don Jon came out and reminded us of those curves. And then Her reminded us of that voice. We're back on the bandwagon. Big time.

15. Lolo Jones
lolo jones

When the lovely and infamously virginal Lolo Jones competed (underwhelmingly, it has to be said) in track and field at the Summer Olympics, we thought it would be four more years till we heard from her again. How wrong we were. Jones took it upon herself to take up a new sport -- bobsled -- and somehow managed to qualify for the Sochi Games. We'll be cheering her on.

14. Olivia Wilde
olivia wilde ESPYs

Olivia Wilde is uber-girlfriend material: She's witty (follow her on Twitter for proof), beautiful (like, crazy beautiful) and resolutely down to earth. No matter what role she's playing, that inherent likability shines through (her cameo in Her was particularly memorable). Jason Sudeikis is a lucky, lucky man.

13. Cara Delevingne
Cara Delevingne

Cara Delevingne is the it-girl of the moment. What that means is that everyone thinks she's cool. And by everyone, we mean people like Rihanna, with whom she's been photographed partying up a storm. Her distinctive facial features have made her one of the most in-demand models on the planet, and now she is, inevitably, making her way into acting.

12. Kat Dennings
kat dennings

The fact that Google suggests "bra size" when you search "Kat Dennings" says something about her appeal to men. But there's more to the Thor and 2 Broke Girls actress than curves. Her combination of comedic timing and indie-girl coolness makes her irresistible, both onscreen and off.

11. Beyonce
beyonce super bowl halftime show

In 2013, Beyoncé officially transcended pop stardom to become something akin to royalty. Her innovative “visual” album proved that no marketing is necessary for a star of her caliber, and convinced us for the umpteenth time of her general unattainable perfection. We’ve got to hand it to Jay Z -- we’d feel insufficient in her presence.

10. Kate Moss
kate moss

Kate Moss recently turned 40 and posed for Playboy, which means that, yes, it's time to use the "fine wine" cliché. We dig her now even more than we did during her waif-y heyday, and look forward to seeing her plastered across billboards and magazines for many years to come. She is and always will be an icon.

9. Margot Robbie
margot robbie

Gentlemen, we have our 21st-century Sharon Stone. Newcomer Margot Robbie gave a new generation their Basic Instinct moment when she performed in that already infamous no-underwear scene with Leo DiCaprio in The Wolf of Wall Street. Now that she's impressed audiences everywhere with her looks and acting chops (she does a great Brooklyn accent), her A-list ascent is all but guaranteed.

8. Amy Adams
amy adams american hustle

The only common factor in the chameleonic Amy Adams' roles is the humanity -- and beauty -- she brings to all of them. After appearing in pretty much every major film of 2013, the actress is taking a bit of break in 2014, but will star in Tim Burton's Big Eyes.

7. Kerry Washington
scandal kerry washington

Just when we thought Kerry Washington couldn't get any more perfect, she had to go and host SNL and prove that she can do comedy just as well as she can do the type-A Olivia Pope. We also credit the heart-wrenchingly beautiful Scandal star for making us develop a thing for women in power suits.

6. Kate Upton
Kate Upton

Where do we start with Kate Upton? Her inclusion on this list really needs no explanation -- we men are simple creatures, after all. Let's just say that we're continually impressed by all that she's accomplished in her career, and that in every interview, she seems like a super-cool girl.

5. Emma Watson
emma watson mtv movie awards

It's no secret that Emma Watson is gorgeous. She long ago shed associations to the frizzy-haired Hermione and has emerged from child stardom poised and scandal-free. We couldn't take our eyes off her in The Bling Ring and will be in theaters when her next flick, the biblical epic Noah, premieres.

4. Jennifer Lawrence
jennifer lawrence

There's no one more likable in Hollywood than Jennifer Lawrence. She's got it all: beauty, talent and the inimitable goofiness that sets her apart from other A-listers. She was utterly astounding in American Hustle, and we'll be watching when X-Men: Days of Future Past and the next installment of Hunger Games hit theaters this year.

3. Emily Ratajkowski
Emily Ratajkowski

You may not recognize her name, but you definitely know Emily Ratajkowski as the topless brunette who pranced about with Robin Thicke and Pharrell in the "Blurred Lines" video. With her deadly curves and coma-inducing pout, Ratajkowski was catapulted to immediate fame, and is now rumored to have a spread in this year's Swimsuit Issue.

2. Alison Brie
alison brie

There's something about Alison Brie that attracts men like moths to a flame. It has to do with a rare-in-Hollywood combination of her smoldering good looks, comedic goofiness and down-to-earth attitude. She first came to our attention in Mad Men, but it's really in Community that her talents shine through. We're thrilled that it's back on air.

1. Emilia Clarkeemilia clarke game of thrones

No other show has as devoted a fanbase as Game of Thrones. Emilia Clarke may be known mostly for her role as Daenerys Targaryen, but to viewers, the otherworldly beauty is everything. Anticipation is riding crazy-high for the show's return, but we're also looking forward to Clarke's starring role in Dom Hemingway. Mark our words: This will be her year.

The 5 Best Cuts Of Beef

steak

Beef is a pretty big deal. Let's face it: For many of us, it's the go-to meat.

But not everyone knows that much about the beef that they're eating, buying and cooking -- especially when it comes to steak. That's where we come in.

To get a perspective on the best cuts of beef, we talked to Marty Carpenter, an executive director at Canada Beef. His entire job is to know and advocate for beef.

Instead of just assuming the highest-ticket item in the restaurant is the most flavorful cut of beef you can get, let's look at the distinctions between the best cuts.

There is no one best cut for any given person, but knowing what makes them different and what to expect when you cook or order them will give you a better steak experience.

5. Top Sirloin Cap

The top sirloin cap is a rarer cut of meat to find as it's usually already sectioned out into steaks. The cut comes from the triangular-shaped muscle immediate above the top sirloin. It's a very versatile cut of meat, both lean and flavorful, with a variety of different preparation options like grilling, broiling, and pan searing available.  The top sirloin cap works really well when marinated or seasoned with a dry rub.

4. Tenderloin

The tenderloin, referred to in other parts of the world as a filet, is a cut from the loin of beef. The tenderloin exists beneath the ribs and next to the backbone. The tenderloin is, as its name implies, the most tender cut of beef. Those who do not prefer the marbling of the rib eye and strip loin will thoroughly enjoy the tenderloin.

3. Top Sirloin

The top sirloin is a cut from the loin that offers good flavor in a thick cut ideal for grilling, broiling, sautéeing or pan-frying. While the top sirloin doesn't have as much marbling as a rib eye or New York strip, it certainly has enough to provide good flavor for a steak. Preferred thickness for top sirloin cuts tends to be in the 1-inch to 2-inch range, with 2 inches being ideal. Thicker steaks don't run the risk of drying out as easily when cooked.

2. Strip Loin/ New York Strip

The strip loin, sometimes referred to as strip steak, New York strip, and internationally, a club steak, is a cut from the short loin. The short loin is a large muscle allowing for very thick cuts, and provides a great alternative for those who don't enjoy the significant internal fat content of the rib eye. When the strip loin is sold with a piece of the tenderloin included, it is referred to as a T-bone steak, or a porterhouse. The main difference between these two is that the porterhouse has a more sizable chunk of the tenderloin included.

1. Rib Eye

The rib eye is the ultimate steak-lover's steak. It's the most flavorful cut of the animal, and comes with very rich marbling, which provides superior taste when cooked. The cut itself comes from the rib section, where it gets its name. The bone from the rib is typically removed before sale, although some restaurants specifically sell "bone-in rib eye" preparations of the cut. Its abundance of marbling makes it a great cut for grilling and slow roasting.

20 Handyman Skills That Everyone Should Have

fixing a sink

When it comes to the heavy handyman stuff  serious electrical work, deep plumbing, anything to do with a septic tank  we understand why you might want to leave it to the pros.

But a man should also know his way around a toolbox. Even if you live in an apartment or condo, it’s important to be able to take care of the basics yourself.

Plus, if you’ve been calling a plumber every time your sink gets clogged, then you’re throwing away your money.

But most importantly, knowing how to take care of things yourself will give you self-assurance and a greater sense of ownership over your home  which in turn will make you likelier to pick up more handyman skills as your confidence grows.

Men used to learn a lot of basic carpentry, plumbing, electricity and other maintenance skills from their fathers as a matter of course, but for those of you who didn’t get these lessons, here are 20 skills every man should have to be the master of his own castle.

1. Find a stud

Studfinders  the tool that spawned a thousand easy jokes  aren’t expensive, but why depend on a gadget when you can find the stud yourself? Studs are the vertical beams that support walls, and they provide support when mounting decorations, TV screens or to anchor heavy furniture. There should be a stud on either side of each window, as well as beside electrical boxes for switches and outlets. Another giveaway is to look where any nails have been hammered into the molding, as they’re usually driven into the stud. Studs tend to be set every 16 or 24 inches around the room, so once you’ve found one you can measure the rest. To check, you can sound out where the studs are: when you tap the wall, it will mostly have a slightly hollow sound but it will sound noticeably denser where there’s a stud.

2. Anchor a bookcase to a wall

Now that you can find a stud, it’s time to use it. Heavy standalone objects like bookshelves should be attached to the wall to ensure that a seismic event, household accident or super-athletic bout of sex doesn’t bring it down.

First, find the studs in the wall where you want to anchor your bookshelf. Depending on what kind of bookcase you’re anchoring and how much damage you’re willing to see it take, there are a few ways to approach this. If the bookshelf is backless, you’re golden: simply measure and space two L-brackets at least 24 inches apart, making sure one of them is on the stud. Use a pencil to mark the drill holes on both the wall and the shelf; hammer or drill a pilot hole in the marked spots; then screw the L-bracket to the side or underside of the shelf and to the wall.

For a bookcase with a back, first measure the case, minus its frame (so, the width of the case’s shelves), then cut a 1x6 piece of lumber to match. Drill two or three evenly-spaced pilot holes at the height of the case’s top shelf, making sure that at least one of these goes into a stud. Mark their locations on the piece of lumber you cut, then place the lumber and drill a second set of pilot holes so that the holes in the lumber line up with those in the walls. Then screw the board to the wall with screws long enough to pass through the board and drywall and into the wall stud. Finally, attach two L-brackets to the underside of the book case’s top shelf, then return the bookshelf to its place and screw the brackets to the mounted piece of lumber.

3. Spackle a hole or scuff

Nothing mars your man-cave more than the unsightly holes and bumps that result from relocating or removing your wall art. To keep your pad looking good, get in the habit of keeping spackle, a putty knife and paint around. First, clean up any loose bits or anything that sticks out from the hole you want to fix. Spread a bit of spackle over the hole using the putty knife, pressing hard to lay a thin, smooth layer  spackle shrinks, so it’s OK if there’s a little extra over the hole. Let it dry a few hours, and if needed, apply a second layer. Smooth the spackle with a fine-grade sandpaper until it’s flush with the rest of the wall, then paint over the damaged area.

4. Fix a loose tile

Loose or wobbly tiles are the precursors of broken tiles, making this a minor problem worth getting fixed before it gets major. First, run a preheated iron over the loose tile and surrounding area to loosen its adhesive, then gently lift the tile out. Clean the area underneath with alcohol, then scrape it clean with the putty knife to get all of the old adhesive off. Apply a new coating of tile adhesive to both the gap and to the back of the tile and carefully replace the tile. Use a rolling pin to press the tile into place and get rid of any air bubbles, then wipe clean any excess adhesive on or around the tile. If it’s a floor tile, weigh the tile down with a heavy object, like a stack of books, until the bond sets.

5. Caulk a shower, sink or tub

This one’s almost fun. If you notice that there’s a bit of leakage around your sink, shower or bathtub, it might be time to replace the caulking  that line of putty or gel at the seam where the basin meets the wall or floor. Caulking loses effectiveness over time, so you should reseal it once a year.

First, use a plastic putty knife to scrape off the old caulking, then clean the surface with rubbing alcohol. Apply a stripe of masking tape above and below where you’re applying your caulk  this will give you a clean, even-looking line. Take your tube of caulk  there are numerous kinds, but choosing one with silicone will give you better mildew protection  and load it into the caulking gun, following the directions on the package to cut open the application tip and making sure that you pierce through any secondary layer of packaging inside.

Smoothly move the caulking gun along the seam you want to patch while depressing the caulking gun’s trigger evenly. Once it’s applied, use your finger to smooth and flatten the line, removing any excess caulk, then peel off masking tape. Let the caulking dry for at least a day or two before exposing it to water or moisture.

6. Fix a leaky faucet

The details depend on the model, but the basics are the same: In the end, the solution is almost always to replace a worn-down or faulty washer, O-ring or stem. The following steps will guide you through identifying the problem, but make sure you match the size precisely when you replace any damaged parts.

First, turn off your water, both from the handles over the sink and the mainline, usually a small valve attached to the pipes under your sink. Next, very gently use your flat-head screwdriver to remove the knob handle(s); use a little penetrating oil for lubrication if it feels too tight to slip off easily. Loosen the packing nut with a wrench. This should let you spot the stem, which you can also remove, then check for damage. Do the same with the O-ring and washer, as one of these three elements is likely the culprit. Replace any damaged parts, then reassemble the faucet in the same order  washer and O-ring, stem, packing nut, screw, handle  turn the water back on, and test the water.

If it’s still leaky, then you’ve done what you can. The problem runs deeper and it’s time to call a plumber.

7. Unclog a drain

Depending on the extent of the clog, you’ve got a few options here. First, try to clear the drain with a mixture of vinegar, hot water and baking soda  a few good glugs should clear any soft blockages like grease or product. If that doesn’t do the trick, your next stop is the plunger  not the one you use for your toilet, dude; you deserve better than that. Fill the sink half-full of water, then plunge the sink drain like you would a toilet, pumping the rubber part to create suction.

Still clogged? Check the trap. Place a bucket under your pipes, then unscrew the trap  the curved piece of pipe that connects your sink to the vertical pipe  either by hand or using a pipe wrench. Empty the water and clear any clogs, then return the trap to its place, reattach to the other pipes, and test by running some water to see whether the drain is cleared. And if that doesn’t work…

8. Snake a drain

No, it’s not glamorous, but you’ve got to get that gunk out of there. To do this, you’ll need a drain auger, a coiled spiral tool that pushes or drills through a deep clog; if you don’t have your own, most building centers rent both manual and electric models.

First, try the drain: Push the end of the snake into the opening and turn its drum handle clockwise, sending the auger cable down the drain until you feel resistance. Keep rotating the snake until the resistance passes, then pull it out  whatever’s plugging up the sink will likely come out with it. Run water to ensure that the clog has passed.

If it’s still obstructed, then the problem likely runs deeper. Under your sink, remove the horizontal pipe that connects the trap to the stub pipe in the wall, either by hand or using a pipe wrench. Turn the snake handle clockwise, while pushing the auger further into the pipe, trying to catch and pull anything that provides resistance, as above. Once you’ve cleared the problem, retract the cable from the stub pipe and re-attach the trap and horizontal pipe.

9. Seal a pavement crack

If you don’t live in an apartment, your empire (and its maintenance) could well extend out into the driveway. Sadly, cracks in concrete and asphalt are a reality of life  ones that, left unaddressed, will develop into a full-blown potholes. Luckily, they’re easy to fix. Before you start, remove any plants or debris from the crack, first with a screwdriver or knife tip, then by giving it a once-over with the garden hose to blast out anything deeper. Let the crack dry.

When it’s dry, apply crack filler until it’s flush with the rest of the surface you’re repairing, then wait at least 24 hours until it’s fully dry. If the crack’s still visible, go for a second coat. Wait a good one to two days before walking or driving on the crack once you’ve repaired it, to ensure that it’s fully set.

10. Change a shower head

To remove the old shower head, turn a wrench counter-clockwise to loosen its notch, then screw off the old head with your hands. Use a rag soaked with vinegar or a little bit of alcohol to scrub off any scum or residue around the old shower head stem. Wrap the end of the stem pipe with a few layers of Teflon tape, then use your fingers to smooth the tape. Install the replacement head, tightening it onto the pipe clockwise by hand. Turn the shower on to check for leaks  if it’s still spouting, tighten the new shower head with a wrench, being careful to proceed gradually to prevent over-tightening.

11. Clean the gutters

Regardless of the climate you live in, cleaning out the gutters is part and parcel of living in a house, rather than an apartment or condo  and not doing it will give you a bigger headache in the long run. If your gutters are higher than one story, then it might be time to hire a pro. But if they’re on the first floor, you should be able to handle this yourself.

First, get up on a ladder, making sure it’s stable. You can use a stand-off, or ladder stabilizer, to avoid damaging the gutters or house siding. First, use a trowel to dig out dead leaves and other debris that’s collected in the gutters, collecting it in a bucket or garbage bag. Next, flush the pipes clean with a hose  the higher the pressure, the better. Finally, use the hose to flush out the downspouts, making sure to check that the water flows through without blockage.

12. Replace a toilet seat

This one’s a small chore that can make a world of difference. First, open the bolt caps, the plastic snap-shut lid at the back of the toilet seat. Reach around and under the toilet seat to the nut that secures the seat to the bowl, and grip this with an adjustable wrench. Holding the nut, unscrew the two seat bolts and lift off the old toilet seat. Place the new seat, aligning its anchor bolts with the two holes in the toilet base. Push the bolts through the holes, then screw on the nuts from the underside by hand. Make sure that the seat is centered, then finish tightening the two nuts with a wrench.

13. Tighten a loose door hinge

If you notice an interior door sticking or scraping, it’s probably time to tighten up its hinges. If you can jiggle the door up and down when you grab it by the lock side, then this is your culprit  but it’s almost criminally easy to fix. First, find and remove any loose screws in the hinges. For each removed screw, take a wooden matchstick, dip it in carpenter’s glue, and drive it into the screw hole, then break or cut off any part of the matchstick that sticks out. Drive each screw back into the patched hole, and the matchstick-glue combo should hold it secure.

14. Use anchor screws to hang heavy objects

Sometimes there just isn’t a stud where you need it, but there’s no need to let that mess with your feng shui. It just means that you’ll have to anchor your screws into the wallboard. Be warned, though: While anchored screws do give you a bit more leverage while you’re hanging things like artwork, a mirror or a small shelf, no amount of anchoring is going to let you hang heavy objects from plaster or drywall without support from a stud.

First, buy your anchors  you’ll need to use a metal anchor for plaster walls, while plastic anchors work better in drywall. The anchor also needs to match the size of the screws you’re using, and these should be at least 1.5 inches long to secure your hanging. Drill or hammer your pilot holes where you want to hang something the heavier the object, the more anchors you’ll need to hold it up. Gently hammer in the anchor until it’s flush with the wall, then screw in the screw, leaving about a quarter-inch to hang your mounted object on.

15. Change a doorknob

Unscrew the two screws in the handle’s face plate (the piece that fixes the door to the door jamb), knob plate (the piece that fixes the knob to the door) and strike plate (the piece in the door jamb with a slot for the latch). Pull the handles off both sides of the door, slide out the face plate and pawl and remove the strike plate. If the new knob you’re installing is a different size than the one you’re replacing, use a hammer and chisel to adjust the openings in the door and door jamb.

To install the new knob, first push the new pawl mechanism and face plate into the side of the door, making sure that the latch faces the same direction that the door will close so that it connects correctly with the strike plate, then screw the face plate into place. Insert the handles into the door so that the pawl’s square peg fits into its slot in each knob, the screw holes align with threaded cylinders on each side, and any levers and locks face the right direction  then screw each knob plate into place. Finish it off by screwing on the strike plate.

16. Change a furnace filter

Furnace filters should be changed at least every three month  and more often if you smoke in your house or have pets that shed heavily. First, remove the vent cover  depending on the furnace model, this will either be a large ventilation grate in the wall, floor or ceiling or else in the furnace itself. Look to see if there are arrows on the screen  some models have to face a specific direction to function  and note which direction they point. Put the old filter directly in a garbage bag (or else it’ll spread dust everywhere), then slide in the new filter, making sure it faces the correct direction, and replace the vent cover.

17. Replace a screen window

Take down the window frame and lay it on a flat surface. Pry the old screen out of its frame. If the frame is wood, you can rip the old screen out of the staples or nails used to attach it; if the frame’s metal or vinyl, look for a black rubber seal, the spline, and use a screwdriver to pry the spline out. Roll the new screen over the top of the frame, then cut it so that there’s one inch of extra screen around the frame’s edges.

For a wood frame, use a hammer or staple gun to attach the stretched screen to the outside of the frame. For a metal or vinyl frame, use a spline tool or putty knife to force the spline and the screen into the window groove. Secure one corner of the screen and pull the rest of the screen tight as you work your way around the frame, then use a screwdriver to attach the spline and screen into the frame’s groove in each corner. Finish it up by cutting away any excess screen, then return the frame to the window.

18. Paint like a pro

While pretty much anyone can paint indoor walls, doing it right means taking steps for a neat, clean job. Before you start, repair any holes or scuffs in the wall with spackle. Prep the room for painting: Cover the floor and any furniture you can’t move with a canvas or plastic sheet, taping down its edges, and remove any light switch plates and electrical outlet covers and cover those with tape too.

Next, use a pole-sander and 120-grit sandpaper to sand the walls  this helps the wall take paint better and more evenly  then vacuum the sanding dust off the walls and run a wet cloth or sponge all over the walls. Apply lines of painter’s tape wherever there is an edge that isn’t being painted  the floor, around the ceiling and any wall you don’t want to be on the same color. Take some care with this, as uneven or hastily applied tape will create a sloppy line to your paint.

You might need to apply a coat of primer, a lighter coat of paint that helps your final color pop. You should definitely prime the wall if it’s never been painted, if you spackled any damaged spots, if the existing paint is glossy or if you’re painting over a darker colour. Let your primer coat fully dry before you start painting  an hour minimum for latex-based paints, and at least eight hours for other kinds.

For the main act, start by using an angled brush to paint a 2-inch line in each corner. For the walls themselves, you should use a roller. First wet the roller, then dip it into the paint colour and roll it in the paint try until it’s evenly coated. Apply the paint all over the walls in M and W-shaped motions, then let the paint dry.

19. Stop a toilet that runs

toilet that “runs,” or where the tank is constantly refilling with water, is one of the easiest handyman fixes. The culprit is likely the flapper valve, a rubber flap in the toilet tank that controls the flow of water into the bowl.

Remove the toilet tank lid and set it aside. Inside the tank you’ll find a balloon-like ball called an overflow tube, which should lie flush with the tank’s waterline; the tube will be attached to flapper guides, arms secured to the rubber flapper at the tank’s base. A common problem is that the chain or rod that connects the flapper to the flapper guides breaks or snaps free; if this is the case, just replace or reattach the piece and the toilet should flush as normal. If the chain is still attached but is slack, then you need to adjust its length  simply disconnect the wire from the flapper guide and reconnect it to a different hole in the bar.

20. Change a light switch

First, shut off the power. Turn the power off at the breaker  and make sure to test that you’ve flipped the right breaker and the power’s definitely off before you start meddling with electricity, preferably with a voltage tester.

Use a screwdriver to remove the switch plate cover, then unscrew the switch’s mounting screws (usually found at the top and bottom) from the electrical box and pull the switch out if the wall with the wires still attached. There will be two or three wires attached to the switch: an incoming hot wire (black), a return wire (any color except green) and maybe a grounding wire (either green or plain copper)  although exceptions abound. Use a Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the wires from the switch, then cut the wire connection or use needle-nose pliers to remove the wires from the terminals. Remove the insulation from each wire with wire strippers, and use needle-nose pliers to make a small loop at the end of each wire. Get ready to connect the new switch, but make sure it’s in the right position  the switch turned down with the word “off” showing.

Attach the wires to the new switch in the same positions where they were connected in the old switch, hooking the loops over the new switch’s terminals and then tightening them. Mount the new switch into the electrical box and reattach the switch’s face plate.

30 Phrases Every Drinker Should Know

drinks bartender

If there's one thing drinks connoisseurs love, it's jargon.

Brewers, distillers, wine and beer sommeliers, bartenders: They're all into whipping out specialized vocabulary about their work.

Whether you're a boozehound or not, these are the words you should know to sound savvy when you're mixing or ordering drinks.

1. ABV

ABV stands for alcohol by volume, a measurement of a beverage’s alcohol content as a percentage of ethanol to fluid volume. A liquor’s proof is defined as being twice the ABV percentage -- so a whisky that’s 80 proof will have 40% ABV.

2. Aperitif

Alcoholic drink intended to stimulate the appetite, usually dry rather than sweet. Classic apéritifs include dry white wine or Champagne, cocktails that include vermouth or bitter spirits like Campari and wine-based liqueurs like Dubonnet or Lillet.

3. Back

A small non-alcoholic beverage, usually taken alongside neat spirits or a shot. When the back is taken after the drink instead of with it, it’s known as a chaser.

A “bar back,” however, is an industry position, the person who is responsible for restocking the bar during service but generally doesn’t serve customers -- also sometimes known as a bar runner.

4. Bitters

An aromatic botanical or herbal infusion used to add flavor to cocktails and mixed drinks. These are sometimes alcoholic, sometimes not.

5. Box

A mixing practice where a drink is quickly poured into the cocktail shakerthen into the glass, so that ingredients are thoroughly blended without shaking.

6. Bruised

A cocktail or martini is “bruised” when it’s been over-shaken, adding slivers of ice and oxygen bubbles to the drink that give it a murky or cloudy appearance. Among pros, bruising cocktails is considered the mark of an amateur.

7. Call Drink

A mixed drink or highball where the liquor is named by brand, such as a Jack Daniel’s and Coke (aka Jack and Black) or Blue Sapphire and tonic. When ordering, name the booze first, followed by the mix.

8. Cicerone

A cicerone is a beer sommelier, an expert consumer of international, specialty and craft beers. The name “cicerone” is a private trademark for a training program -- adapted from the Italian word for a museum tour guide -- but the term is also used to describe beer-tasting professionals outside the program.

9. Cocktail

Most people call any mixed drink a cocktail, particularly if it includes juice, but technically to be defined as a cocktail a beverage must include four elements: bitters, spirits, sugar, and water. So, an Old Fashioned or aManhattan are cocktails, while a Mimosa is not.

10. Digestif

An alcoholic beverage served after a meal to stimulate digestion. Classic digestifs include brandies, whiskies, fortified wines and liqueurs.

11. Dirty

Includes a splash of olive brine that “dirties” clear spirits. The term is mostly used with reference to martinis, but any clear booze (vodka, gin, white rum or tequila) can be ordered dirty.

12. Dry

Mostly used to refer a martini with little to no vermouth, a dry drink can also be a cocktail or mixed drink with very little mix (the non-alcoholic component).

13. Finger

An informal measurement, indicating a spirits pour about the thickness of a finger in the glass, which works out to about 1 ounce.

14. Float

Layering an ingredient at the top of the drink. Classic drinks with floating liquor include the “striped” B-52 shooter or the Harvey Wallbanger cocktail -- the latter takes a small float of Galliano to distinguish it from a Screwdriver. This is also sometimes known as “lacing.”

15. Free Pour

Adding alcohol to a drink without measuring.

16. Jigger

Jigger refers to both a 1.5-ounce unit of fluid and the container used to measure it, typically an hourglass-shaped stainless steel cup open at both ends.

17. Long

A mixed drink or cocktail served in a tall tumbler — also known as either a highball or collins, depending on its shape — usually about 8-12 ounces. Ordering a drink long means that there will be more mix, diluting the liquor.

18. Mix/Mixer

The non-alcoholic component of a drink, such as soda or juice.

19. Muddle

Mashing fruit, herbs or other ingredients in the bottom of a cocktail glass to release their flavors. Mojitoscaipiroskas and juleps all include muddled ingredients. The pestle-like device for this is known as a muddler.

20. Neat

A spirit consumed straight, without ice, water or other mix. For the most part, ordering neat means you’ll get more than 1 oz. of booze, although just how much depends on where you’re drinking.

21. Pony

A 1-ounce shot.

22. Proof

A measurement of how much alcohol (or ethanol) there is in a drink or spirit. Proof is double the ABV -- proof is often the preferred measurement in the U.S., while ABV prevails internationally.

23. Rinse

A rinse is a small quantity of liquor used to coat the glass, leaving a trace flavor. For example, a Sazerac cocktail usually takes a rinse of absinthe or pastis, and many bartenders use just a rinse of vermouth in vodka martinis.

24. Roll

A mixing practice where spirits are poured into one glass, then another, then back into the first to ensure they’re well blended.

25. Simple syrup

A sweet mixture made with equal parts white sugar and boiling water, used to sweeten drinks or infused to add flavors.

26. Supercall

In bars, supercall liquors are high-end, premium spirits, also known as top-shelf. These are distinguished from the rail, house or well liquor brands that bars use by default. So, if you order a gin and tonic, you’ll get the house brand, but a Hendrick's and tonic is a supercall order.

27. Short

Served in a short (also known as a rock or sometimes old fashioned) glass. For mixed drinks and cocktails, ordering it “short” means that there will be less mix and a stronger drink.

28. Topless

Topless means you want to order a drink that’s usually rimmed -- that crust of salt, sugar or celery salt around the lip of the glass on drinks like margaritas and Bloody Caesars -- without.

29. Virgin

Describes a non-alcoholic cocktail, often a spin on an existing cocktail recipe, minus the spirits.

30. Wet

Describes extra vermouth in a martini -- and sometimes extra mixer in a cocktail or mixed drink.

10 Simple Ways To Save Money When You Go Out

$

Fishbowl Drink

There's no quicker way to drain your wallet than to let your drunken self call all the shots in your financial life.

We know, we know, you just wanted to go grab one drink with a couple friends.

Next thing you knew, you were wasted, gorging on fast food, and taking an expensive cab ride home. It's happened to all of us before.

You don't have to swear off bars entirely to save money, though, and we've compiled a list of the simplest tips to help you manage your money when your decision-making skills aren't at their prime.

1. Get A Designated Driver

Somewhere along the line, one of the most sensible solutions to group bar outings fell out of favor. Having a designated driver isn't just a good idea for your personal welfare, it's also a great way to save on what can be one of the most expensive factors at the end of the night: the cab ride home. Some of us are lucky enough to live in places where public transportation has our back late at night, but for the rest of us, we need to make other plans. It may be more planning than most people are used to when going to the bar, but it will save you big in the long term.

2. Drink Before You Go Out

Some of you may already have pre-gaming as part of your group's going-out routine, but if you don't, now is the time to start. Not only do you save a lot of money on drinks, you get to hang out with the guys and get in the mood to go out. By the time you get to the party, you'll all be having a good time already, and this will probably lead to a better night overall. If you don't live in close enough proximity to make this realistic, at least try meeting at a dive bar nearby before you make your way to your night's final destination.

3. Avoid Bars With Covers

For some of you, this might not be an issue at all. Plenty of cities aren't home to a lot of bars with covers. If you happen to live in one that does, however, avoiding them will be a great way to save some cash right off the bat. As with a lot of these tips, it may not seem like a lot of money at first, but when you combine all these factors together, they add up to a lot of money you probably didn't need to spend.

4. Buy Pitchers When Possible

If you're not in the habit of buying pitchers and you want to save some money, this is a great place to start. It's easily the most budget-conscious drink choice you can make at the bar. The worst choice you can make is, of course, shots. They cost as much as a mixed drink in many places, and they're gone before you can blink. If you frequently end up staring at your bill at the end of the night wondering how the hell you managed to spend so much money, this could be a major factor.

5. Buy Beer On Tap

We understand that you have a deep personal attachment to your preferred brands of beer and liquor. That's totally fine, and we're not trying to take that away from you. If you want to save some money though, try substituting that bottle of imported beer for one of the beers on tap every once in a while. The extra dollar or two might not seem like a big deal at the time, but over the course of a year your brand loyalty might carry a heftier premium than you imagined.

6. Eat Before You Go Out

If you took our earlier advice and started getting into the habit of drinking with your friends before you go to the bar, this will be a lot easier. Since you're already all hanging out together, take the opportunity to order (or perhaps even prepare) before you hit the bar. If you arrive at the bar hungry, you're going to make some pretty awful food decisions once you're a few drinks in. We're sure your own personal experience can probably confirm this. Take that decision out of the equation early by getting some good grub when you still have your wits about you.

7. Split The Food Order

If eating before you got to the bar wasn't an option for one reason or another, at least consider splitting the bill on your food order when you go out. Ordering a few appetizers for the group will end up being a lot cheaper than each of you individually ordering a burger and fries.

8. Decide On A Budget

The best way to not spend too much money on your evenings out is to decide on a fixed budget beforehand. Since it can be very tricky to stop the spending spree once you've already got a few in you, we recommend taking out cash in advance and leaving the cards at home. This way, you don't have a choice but to stick to your budget. If you're worried about finding a way home, hopefully you've opted for the designated driver. If this didn't happen, though, services like Uber  which keeps your card on file  will help you get home without needing a credit card on hand.

9. Indulge Early, Save Later

If you are one who enjoys a nice glass of scotch and you are finding it hard to compromise on your alcohol choices, try to start top-shelf at the beginning of the night and work your way down. Once you're five drinks deep, you're probably not going to appreciate the nice stuff anyway, so switching to cheaper brands can be a nice way to save money without compromising your taste entirely.

10. Don't Go At All

The easiest way to not spend too much at the bar is to not go at all. Now, we're not trying to suggest you have to eliminate your drinking nights out from your life entirely, but opting for a friend's house every now and then will save a lot in the long run. Be honest  sometimes when you go out, you probably just want to catch up with some friends or watch the game. On nights like this, having a gathering at a friend's house is probably going to be just as satisfying.

The start of every day represents a new chance for you to be a better man. Here we focus on the top 10 ways to tweak your morning routine in order to look better today -- and improve your appearance in the long run.

1. Move your body

treadmill running workout gym exercise menSqueezing in a sweat session in the morning will improve both your body and your mind -- now and in the future. In addition to exercise building a fitter, hotter body, the endorphin rush it results in will put you in a cheery mood for hours, and your skin will become clearer over time. You'll also deal better with stresses that arise over the course of the day. Although you'll notice benefits from any type of morning physical activity, favor cardio workouts, because you'll burn more fat in the a.m., and save weight training for later in the day.

5. Shave

harry's truman shaving set blueBy and large, women prefer a freshly shaved face, so be sure to allot time in your routine for this essential grooming task. Even if you don't need to shave every day, leave yourself 5 minutes every morning to do a quick one-over on your mug and assess your hair growth situation. By adopting this habit, you'll never have the experience of going through half your day before realizing you missed three rather conspicuous spots the last time you shaved. The same logic applies when it comes to tweezing nose and ear hair or a unibrow.

6. Do 100 push-ups

crossfit, working out, pushup, exerciseIt may be an oldie, but it's a goodie: Adding 100 push-ups to the end of your cardio training in the morning will give you solid abs and strong biceps that women go wild for. What's more, waking up your core muscles this way will improve your posture for the remainder of the day -- you'll appear taller and more confident.

7. Pack a lunch

sandwich turkeyMaking your own lunch takes only minutes and will save you a shocking number of excess calories and unnecessary sodium that come with eating processed food or dining out every day. For men crunched for time, simply swapping in a bagged lunch twice a week can make a difference in their appearance in terms of shedding a few pounds, reducing bloating and keeping cholesterol and blood pressure in check.

8. Use a facial cleanser

man showeringFor immediately brighter skin, massage your face with a high-quality facial cleanser while you're in the shower. Look for one that contains an exfoliant or a 2% salicylic acid solution, as either will help to get gunk out of your pores, resulting in clearer skin within a month. To reduce the appearance of splotchy skin and instantly look more awake, wash your face using cold water.

9. Consume caffeine

man holding coffee cupBlack coffee and green or black tea are packed with antioxidants that will keep you looking young. Research also suggests that imbibing these liquids regularly in moderate quantities may lower your risk of dementia later on as well as various forms of cancer. Plus, a cup of joe gives you that much-loved get-up-and-go jolt we all need in the morning, particularly when combined with an early workout.

10. Apply a signature scent

Switching up your usual cologne every once in a while is a commendable experiment, but there's something to be said for having a signature too. After all, wearing the same fragrance on a regular basis means the women in your life will come to associate this scent with you. To smell amazing all day long, layer your scents by matching your deodorant, your cologne and even your soap if possible.

10 Ways Any Guy Can Improve How He Looks

workout

Far from being superficial, a concern with one's external appearance is deeply ingrained within our nature as humans.

After all, a potential mate’s attractiveness ranks as one of the top traits of interest to the opposite sex. In addition, research suggests that more attractive individuals might actually earn more in the long term.

Fortunately for you, even if you weren’t as lucky in the genetic lottery as Brad Pitt, there are a number of tactics you can avail yourself of in the service of making the most of what you were given. Here we list our top 10 tips to help you look like the best version of yourself — and increase your share of life’s treasures.

1) Pluck unwanted hair

Nose hair, ear hair or scraggly hair that's poking out anywhere else on your face isn't sexy. Get rid of excess hair in these areas by using tweezers. Grasp each strand firmly and pull in the direction of the hair growth. Once a week, check your face for new hairs that might have popped up. If you have unruly eyebrows or a unibrow, consider getting your brows professionally waxed or shaped — it doesn't cost much, and this way you won't end up with any grooming accidents.

2) Exercise before you go out

When you've got a big night out planned and you want to look your best for it, sneak in a sweat session a couple of hours before your event. Ideally, you should mix cardio with weight-bearing exercises, concentrating on doing reps that engage your major muscle groups (particularly if you're short on time), as this technique will make your muscles look ultra-toned for several hours. Plus, exercising will boost your confidence and give your skin a healthy glow.

3) Practice good posture

By standing up straight, you'll automatically look leaner, with more defined musculature. You’ll also project more confidence, an attribute that most people find very appealing. When you’re standing up properly, your weight should rest more on your toes than your heels, your abs should be taut and pulled toward your belly, and your shoulders should be rolled back.

4) Take care of your mouth

Brush your teeth regularly with whitening toothpaste, floss every night and whiten your teeth with a home kit twice a year. Everyone finds a healthy set of teeth and gums attractive, and not taking care of your mouth can be downright repulsive. Go one step further and get soft lips by running your toothbrush lightly over them to slough off dead skin. Then, in the morning, apply a non-noticeable lip chap and switch to a heavy-duty, super-intensive healing balm before bed.

5) Invest in skin care

To ensure that the products you buy will work for you, figure out your skin type. Men with oily or acne-prone skin will benefit from a facial wash containing a 2% salicylic acid concentration, while guys with dry skin should seek out a cleanser with a creamy texture. Your skin-care arsenal should also include a hydrating moisturizer, an eye cream to reduce any signs of aging, sunscreen to protect against the damaging effects of UV rays, and an exfoliator to make your skin brighter and help unclog pores by getting rid of debris and dead cells.

6) Match your face to your hair and facial hair

A haircut and facial hair style that are based on your face shape can make a monumental difference in your appearance. A square-shaped face, for example, suits most short- to medium-length haircuts and can take on a variety of facial hair styles. Talk to your barber about employing tricks like a longer front to conceal a high forehead or strategically growing facial hair to render a soft jaw line or a small chin less noticeable. Whatever combo of hair and facial hair you settle on, always take pride in grooming. That means maintaining healthy hair with regular cuts, changing your razor blade often, investing in shaving cream, and making sure your facial hair has sharply defined edges.

7) Cultivate a classic wardrobe

There are two reasons timeless pieces are the backbone of any stylish man's wardrobe: 1) Assembling a collection of basics — including a navy suit or blazer, white dress shirts, dark denim, easy-to-layer tees, neutral-colored cardigans, and an all-purpose trench — means that you'll always appear effortlessly elegant, and, 2) By adding trendy items to an otherwise classic ensemble, you instantly freshen up your look and come off as having an amazing sense of style.

8) Wear clothes that fit

You can shell out for all the upscale designer wool suits and cashmere sweaters you want, but if your clothes don't fit you properly, you'll seem like you have more money than style. The biggest mistake men make when it comes to ill-fitting clothing is to favor baggy apparel over more body-conscious designs. Even if you're on the heavyset side, clothing that holds close to your body (but isn't skin-tight) is the most flattering.

9) Know your flaws

Taking an honest assessment of your body and face can go a long way toward helping you make the most of your appearance. When you know your weak points, you'll be able to minimize them or conceal them to your advantage. For example, some clever work on your barber's part can take the focus off a receding hairline. Additionally, accepting your spare tire means you can get rid of pieces that add bulk, such as double blazers, and start shopping for clothes that create the illusion of a more V-shaped physique, like two-button blazers in lightweight fabrics.

10) Eat and drink right

Make a concerted effort to eat right and you’ll have won half the battle in looking your personal best. Your body is like a machine, and refueling that machine with high-quality fuel will profoundly affect how efficiently it runs in addition to how much fat you store, the clarity of your skin, and the strength of your hair and nails. There’s no magic to it: Just make sure you include plenty of lean protein in your diet from poultry and fish, fill up your plate with green veggies, and favor antioxidant-filled fruit for dessert. Finally, hydrate properly by consuming eight glasses of water daily.

11 Habits That Exude Success

$

richard branson thumbs up

Consider this: You can polish your mind with knowledge until it is a blinding shine, but if you don't externalize it, no one will recognize it.

Success is all about being noticed. You get noticed by showing the goods.

By adopting the following habits, you'll televise your qualities to the world (discreetly, of course).

Just watch how people react to you.

Brag Discreetly

I cannot emphasize the word discreetly enough.

If you trumpet all your achievements and pricey possessions, you will lose everyone's respect. You want people to know that you're making it without coming off as a boaster; slip things into conversation casually. State your accomplishments as matter-of-factly as possible without the detailed trimmings, or slip them into stories.

For instance, say: "I went to New Zealand on vacation. I had some extra money from the bonus I got for increasing our sales one year." This presentation allows you to stick to the facts and incorporate an achievement into a pertinent story.

But don't make it all about you. Give credit where credit is due. By recognizing success in your peers, you invite praise to be reciprocated in the future.

Be A Good Communicator

Do you ever wonder why companies today spend so much money on PR?

The reason is that effective communication has never been so important. You need to have the right words to communicate the right meaning, and remove any room for misinterpretation by people that are hungry to point out flaws.

The trick?

Choose your words carefully. Be specific and pay attention to context. Words can be warped beyond recognition if used carelessly. Relating only the bare essentials helps in this matter. And if you don't have anything nice to say about people, don't bother saying anything at all.

Listen to others. Really listen. Don't just nod while you wait for them to finish talking. You never know what valuable information could be couched in simple banter. Listen everywhere, even to conversations around the office. Sometimes, there's gold to be found in gossip.

Exit Graciously

Sometimes, you just need to cut a conversation short or leave important company on a dime.

You could just stand there listening politely, but you have better things to do. A successful person knows how to steer conversation with class, and can end one just as gracefully. Don't make excuses for your departure, because you don't have to.

Besides, excuses sound dishonest. Instead, thank the other party for their time and bid them farewell. That's it. It's all about taking command of situations with style.

The Army Wants To 3D-Print Food

$

512px MRE_No._23_(cropped)

Up to this point, 3D printing has been something of a niche technology, as continual improvements are made to the experimental hardware and software. One of the areas that researchers are investigating is 3D-printed food, and experts at the Natick Soldier Research, Development, and Engineering Center in Massachusetts have been looking into ways that Army rations could be produced remotely in the future.

Meals made to order means there's less waste and more variety, something that can have a significant impact when crates of food need to be transported thousands of miles. Another scenario is that soldiers could download and print out a dish based on the ingredients they've managed to forage from wherever they happen to be. While it's still some way from becoming a reality, it points to the potential that 3D printing technology offers.

"The benefits of actively participating in the advancement of 3D printing to the Army are great," said Andy Davis, Army Manufacturing Technology program manager, when speaking to Army Technology magazine. "Coupled with the reality of being able to minimize or eliminate support tooling, 3D printing has nearly limitless applications."

And one of those applications relates to food. The reality of the Army ration system means that meals are produced on a massive and uniform scale, but even if 3D chefs can't improve the taste, they can at least create something more personalized and tailored towards a specific soldier's diet. For now, most 3D food printers output a customized paste or confectionery mixture, but refinements to the technology are being made all the time.

"We're interested in maybe printing food that is tailored to a soldier's nutritional needs and then applying another novel process to render it shelf stable, if needed," says Lauren Oleksyk of the Natick Research Center. "Another potential application may be 3D printing a pizza, baking it, packaging it and putting it in a ration."

There's no set date for when 3D-printed rations might arrive or even when testing might begin, but it's an interesting glimpse into how the future of food on the battlefield or in the disaster zone might look.

Finally, The Madden Game We've Been Waiting For

$

Madden NFL 15 begins with a dramatic video montage of a projected January 15, 2015 Seahawks vs. Panthers NFC championship game before immediately thrusting the users into a make-or-break game situation with a little over a minute left where you play as the Panthers offense against the vaunted Legion of Boom.

If you’re a football fan, you know that the Panthers are a long shot to make the NFC championship game this season, but that is the beauty of Madden: you can virtually pilot your team to NFL glory. Even if they suck in real life. That is but one of the many reasons that millions of guys around the world wait with bated breath for the last week in August, aka Madden holiday, for the latest edition of the game to be released.

The most recent iteration looks amazing, something that last year’s 25th anniversary edition failed to do in some areas. Player models are completely overhauled from uniforms to equipment and their facial and body likenesses. Most of the top-tier players were scanned by EA Sports and it shows.

madden 01

The broadcast aspect has been raised as well thanks to the addition of Emmy-winning former NFL Films cinematographer Brian Murray to the team. There are all new presentations in nearly every aspect of the game. Halftime, post- and pre-game, on-field interaction and pre- and post-snap have all been vastly improved with more camera angles (22 of them), sharper graphics and a more authentic feel.

And it's not just for show; these new camera angles can be used when playing defense, to get a view of offensive shifts and holes developing. And pre-snap on offense, allowing the user to view the line of scrimmage matchups from each player’s perspective.

Every year EA Sports dev team decides what aspect of the game will be tinkered with and this season it is defense. What else would you expect with Richard Sherman on the cover? But it's not so much the secondary that gets all of the attention — although there is a new cone that appears around offensive players displaying a tackle zone and the zone defense AI is improved — it is the big boys in the trenches that get most of the love.

Most Madden players use a blitzing linebacker or D-lineman when choosing the player they want to control on defense, so in Madden 15 there is an added level of control to those guys. Using the face buttons (as opposed to the directional stick), players can put moves on the offensive lineman that are blocking them.

Jumping the snap, steering an O lineman, bull rushing or hitting a big ugly with a swim move to get free for a sack are easier to execute for sure. It’s sort of like a mini game within a game. Jump the snap and push a button at the right time and you’ll get better pressure on the QB. If you don’t like random icons popping up on the screen instructing you when to do what, you can turn the tutorial aspect of this function off.

madden 02

This year, play calling takes on a detailed light that the franchise has never seen before. There is so much data available; you’ll feel like a real head coach. Percentages of success of a play, likelihood of your opponent’s call and more are all on the screen for you to peruse. With the enhanced play calling option (you can turn it off), suggested plays are based on not only the game situation but also community suggestions (based on the effectiveness in online play) and your favorite plays.

Plays are listed by personnel and formation as before, but users can now choose them by concept as well, which add much-needed shortcuts considering many teams have hundreds of available plays in their playbook. There is also immediate feedback on the play you called during the last down.

The kicking system has been revamped again — which shouldn’t be a surprise for longtime Madden Football fans. The latest tweak involves trajectory and arc. Instead of guessing how your punt will go and touchdown, there is an onscreen guide, which appears before the snap. This new feature works well for situational punts, long-field goals and field goals in windy situations.

madden 03

While we’re on kicking, for some reason EA has decided to dead the coin flip altogether. Instead of doing the customary pre-kickoff flip, players can go into the settings menu and decide if they’d prefer to receive or kick. We’re guessing that there is some random advanced-level-coin-flip probability statistic behind this decision to remove such a traditional aspect of the game. Either way, it is weird not having it included.

Madden Ultimate Team is still in the game with an updated interface for all the fantasy football guys. Madden’s most popular feature Franchise (Connected and offline) mode has a new Confidence stat for each player, which determines how they play as the season progresses and new Game Prep tool. Other than those two things, redesigned weekly goals and the welcome multiple commissioner option, thankfully, the mode hasn’t been tinkered with that much.

To get used to all of these changes, we advise you to play the Skills Trainer mode for at least a few minutes.

Madden NFL 15 is what most fans of the franchise wanted last year. All of the aforementioned changes actually improve gameplay, which is somewhat of an anomaly when it comes to sports titles. EA Sports listened to the gaming world’s feedback and put together a proper current-gen Madden game.

Madden NFL 15 hits stores August 26th for PlayStation4 and Xbox One.

10 Movies With Special Effects That Changed Cinema

We recently got another trailer for "Interstellar," Christopher Nolan's highly-anticipated science fiction epic due out in November. Its star Matthew McConaughey maintains this will be one of the biggest films any of us will be experiencing in our lives. The word is that we will see and experience things unlike ever before as we don our IMAX 3D glasses. Big words. That said, many movies have changed the game and surprised us over the years.

The truth though is that for every over-the-top explosion or 3D effect nobody asked for in the first place, Hollywood has made some truly amazing advancements over the last few decades. We're talking about the kind of advancements that actually make you watch a movie like you would a watch an illusionist — and wonder to yourself, "How the hell did they do that?"

They call it the magic of the movies for a reason, and as such, here’s a look at the top 10 films (in chronological order) that took their craft to an exciting new level and caused a visual revolution in theaters.

More From AskMen:

"Tron" was the first time CGI was massively used in a movie.

It’s not that "Tron" (1982) was the best movie ever made, but it was one of the most creative. This was the first time computer-generated imagery had ever been used to such a massive extent in a movie. Visual effects group MAGI used a “SynthaVision” process to render the graphics, which basically means it made the computer see simple shapes as solid objects with density.

This occurs mostly in scenes where the Lightcycles and Recognizers are used, which normally corresponded to scenes where live actors weren’t the focus — because at the time, the technology didn’t exist for live-action figures and CGI animation to be used together. Instead, filmmakers needed to use hand-drawn animation with the live-action shots (mixed with editing) to create what you saw on screen.

Here’s the where things get even more fun though: Many Disney animators initially refused to work on "Tron," as they felt computers would put them out of a job. A little more than two decades later, those fears came true and Disney closed their hand-drawn animation studio in favor of CGI.  However in the irony of ironies, Pixar guru and industry visionary John Lasseter eventually ordered the facilities re-opened, as he saw the value in both type of releases.

Another fun fact? Tron was disqualified from the 1982 Visual Effects Oscars, as voters felt the film’s computer-aided effects were considered "cheating."

One sequence in “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” cost over $5 million to produce.

The irony of a movie like "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" (1991) is that it stands on its own so well that you forget it’s a sequel. Nobody talks about the original to the same extent they do this one — and if we're being honest, the less said about the later sequels, the better.

A large part of that "T2" success is because of the visual effects used that earned the team an Oscar. Unlike something like "Avatar" that is mostly CGI, only a fraction of "T2" is comprised of effect shots. The most famous of them all, though, is the T-1000 morphing sequence, which cost over $5 million to produce over an eight-month period.

Not since "Tron" nearly a decade earlier had a film looked to change the game in the same way "T2" did — and it was noticeable. Utilizing Industrial Light and Magic’s “Cyberscan” (photorealistic CGI) technology, they projected a laser over the face of Robert Patrick, who played the T-1000 model, and then they were able to build the 3D visuals over the scan.

They then paid extreme attention to how Patrick carried himself while shooting the scene and matched up his movements with the character’s movements. Director James Cameron also borrowed the liquid effects from his 1989 hit "The Abyss," to fully round out the impressiveness of the scene.

There are only 4 minutes of CGI dinosaurs in “Jurassic Park,” but it was revolutionary in 1993.

The movie brought dinosaurs to life on-screen … freaking dinosaurs. How is this not an accomplishment? Believe it or not, though, while "Jurassic Park" (1993) is thought of as CGI-heavy movie, it’s really not! Director Steven Spielberg had several actual audio-animatronic dinosaur models built, because they brought a sense of depth and actual realism to this film. However, there were some shots that CGI had to be used for, and those were very much among the first of their kind.

As many critics have pointed out, this was a movie about dinosaurs — and if the grand reveal the first time you really see one wasn’t spectacular, the movie would be seen as a failure. As a result, Spielberg had to ensure those first moments when the extinct creatures made their debut were nothing short of magical and he conspired with the famed Industrial Light and Magic (ILM) group to pull off the illusion. It worked!

This Might Be The Craziest Watch Ever Invented

watch

Swiss watchmaker MB&F's brand new Horological Machine No. 6 looks like it came out of a science fiction cartoon – because it did.

What the company calls its
“most ambitious, most crazy, most complex project to date” was inspired by the spaceship from the 1970s anime Captain Future, a show the company's founder, Maximilian Büsser, used to watch as a kid.

The “Space Pirate,” as the HM6 also goes by, doesn't have a traditional clock face, instead displaying the minutes and hours in two sapphire crystal spheres at the front of the watch.

The two other domes at the aft end of the watch house aluminum spherical turbines, which are supposed to moderate the watch's winding system to prevent wear and damage, but also look really sweet.

The seconds are displayed in the center of the watch via a “flying tourbillon,” mimicking Captain Future's original engine.

To prevent harmful UV rays from causing damage to the watch, they've included a retractable titanium casing controlled by a winding mechanism to cover up the flying tourbillon when you're not looking at it.

watch4Under the hood is a complex engine, which was developed with David Candaux Horlogerie Créative, with two aluminum turbines powered by an automatic winding rotor. It features a total of 475 components and 68 jewels.

The watchmaker says there will only be 100 HM6 models produced in total, with 50 of them being the special “Space Pirate” titanium edition.

spaceshipThey're playing it coy about how much it will cost, and as of this writing haven't responded to our price request, but this kind of thing doesn't come cheap.

An earlier model, the Horological Machine No. 4, would have set you back $158,000, and this one will probably cost even more; but nobody ever thought spaceships would come cheap.watch45

How You Should And Shouldn't Spend Money In Your Twenties

Young Friends

I've been told that how you spend your time and money in your 20s will define you and, from my personal experience, I find this to be very accurate.

Although I am still a 20-something, I am constantly learning where and how my time and money are best spent.

Your 20s are an exciting time and you want to have fun and experience as much as you can, but it's also an instrumental period in regards to building your future.

Due to these two seemingly mutually exclusive facts, it's easy to get confused about where you should and shouldn't be putting your money.

Any big spending may be seen as somewhat foolish when you don't have a lot of money, however, you can spend foolishly ... on wise things.

Here is when to spend money foolishly in your 20s (and when not to).

Where to spend your money

Education

Education is the most important investment you can make. I paid my way through college with student loans that I am still paying off, however, it was worth every penny. Even if you do not find formal education appealing, you can still use your money to pay for instructional books, online classes, vocational school, certification, etc.

Friends Traveling

Travel

I firmly believe in the quote, "Traveling is the only thing you buy that makes you richer." Go see the world while you are young and still believe that you can change it. Getting away is one of the best ways to recharge your tired batteries. Traveling becomes much more expensive and difficult when you get older and have a family to take with you, so the sooner the better.

Experiences

Spend your money foolishly on experiences you won't forget with the people that matter. This means attending concerts, sporting games, nice restaurants, or whatever else you find fun. You might be able to hold on to your material possessions for a while, but you will hold on to great memories for the rest of your life.

Fitness/health

Money invested in your health and wellness is always well-spent. Get a gym membership and force yourself to use it. Buying nice workout clothes is also a good way to motivate you to get to the gym. If normal gyms aren't your thing, try an MMA gym or a Crossfit box. Spend a little extra and buy healthy foods and vitamins to add years to your life.

Investments

Want to know what's better than spending or saving money? Using it to make more money. You can make risky investments in start-ups or stocks that can potentially yield big gains, or you can take less risk by investing in a 401k or IRA. Your 20s are a great time to start building wealth because the compounding power of time is on your side.

Cocktails

Where not to spend your money

Alcohol

I am all for going out and buying a round of drinks for your friends, however, I believe you should limit excessive alcohol purchases to special events and celebrations. Getting bottle service with your friends every weekend "just because" is an easy way to burn through all of your hard-earned money.

Overpriced clothes

Dressing sharp is an easy way to exert confidence and style, but you don't have to break the bank in order to do so. Buying designer brands at full price isn't necessary in order to look good. Don't spend outside your means when it comes to clothing. Plus, there is nothing wrong with purchasing clothes on sale.

Technology you don't need

Unless you're super passionate about technology, you really shouldn't be trying to keep up with the Jetsons. I am a technology entrepreneur and I only get new phones when I have an upgrade and only purchase new laptops when mine break. Make sure you have the technology you need to be successful in work, in school, or in life, but try not to constantly replace non-obsolete gadgets.

A brand new car

Contrary to what you may have been told, cars are not investments. The second you drive a new car off the lot it depreciates up to 10%. If you want to buy a new car, buy an almost new one that someone else just drove off the lot a year ago. You can save thousands by buying a car with only a few thousand miles on it.

Dating

If you're in a serious, committed relationship, there is nothing wrong with spoiling your girl from time to time. However, when you first start dating someone, be careful how much money you spend. Never try to use your money to buy a woman's interest and try to avoid purchasing gifts early on. When you do spend money, it should be on dates and events that will create memories.

10 Morning Rituals That Will Improve Any Guy's Appearance

The Best Short Hairstyles For Balding Men

jude law

Let’s face it, none of us want to age but it is inevitable, and with that comes one of man’s biggest fears: hair loss.

You can either choose to deal it with in a graceful way or make a fool out yourself by growing hair to try to cover the bald spots or receding hairline.

I think dealing with it “gracefully” is a much better way to go about it, so I did some research and collected precious information and pictures of successful and good looking men who are dealing with their hair loss with confidence.

These short hairstyles will help you regain faith in your good looks and emphasize your strengths.

But first things first: losing your hair is part of your genetic code. Yes, there are products on the market that can help with preventing hair loss but there has not yet been released anything that truly makes a cosmetic difference in hair regrowth. Which is to say you have to work with what you have, and short hairstyles will help you do that. Here’s your game plan:

Get familiar with what you have and talk with your barber about what will be the best approach to cutting your hair. Short hairstyles tend to minimize the appearance of thinning hair; longer hair styles emphasize it.

Stop growing the sides of your hair to try to cover the top; by doing this, you are only drawing more attention to the bald spot.

Avoid wearing a hat. Covering the issue is like not dealing with it: the more you see yourself, the better you will become at embracing your new look. Plus your head needs to breathe, so the only reason you should be wearing a hat is for protection from the sun. Got it?

Regularly shampooing thinning or fine hair is necessary due to the fact that hair can become greasy very easily, which will make hair look patchy and even thinner. Overdoing it, on the other hand, can be bad as well, because you don't want to strip your hair of its natural oils. I recommend shampooing no more than three times a week, but if you want to shampoo more often, try using a dry shampoo.

Use a light pomade (a clay would be ideal) for a matte, non-greasy finish. Blow dry your hair for extra volume.

Here are some examples of short hairstyles from the leading men in Hollywood, the fashion industry and television.

Tom Ford

Jude Law

Anderson Cooper

Matt Lauer

Prince William

As always remember that a good hairstyle is about being confident and honest with yourself.
